Lucky Undies: YEAR 2 - HASS - Elaborate

Little J feels lucky when he wears a new pair of yellow undies. After Old Dog destroys them, he loses his confidence. Big Cuz saves the day with the remnants of the undies made into a sweat band, and Little J finds confidence to play the basketball game and win the day.

Elaborate - Present narratives, information and findings in oral, graphic and written forms using simple terms to denote the passing of time and to describe direction and location.

Theme - QUEST STORY

After viewing Little J & Big Cuz, episode1, ‘Lucky Undies’, engage students with the following activities to support their understanding of Little J’s sense of luck and superstition.

Little J’s quest to play in the ‘big kids team’ and do his best is a story of a person overcoming fears of failure, and rising to the moment. Have students consider the aspects of primary and secondary sources of evidence in the episode.

  • Primary sources of evidence is first-hand accounts of an event from the people who were there.
  • Secondary sources of evidence is collected from reputable sources that were not present for the event but who have heard about it from other people, or have researched and written about it at another time.

Quiz students on where they could find primary and secondary sources of evidence, e.g. news reports of TV/Internet, YouTube clips of footage captured by people who were there, newspaper/magazine articles, reference libraries, museums, art galleries, etc. Suggested resource:

Group students in small groups and have them prepare a ‘News Report’ on the basketball game at Little J’s school. They can take on various roles including a news reporter and eyewitnesses (characters) to collect evidence. They will be required to look at the event from different perspectives. An example could be,

The group can compile and produce a videoed TV news report where the students of the group act in character when interviewed. Or, the facts are collected by numerous news reporters and the group compiles a written report with images for publication on a website or local/school newspaper.
